Connections 3D: How to Spot Red Herrings & Categorize 16 Words

Connections 3D elevates daily linguistic association puzzles into an isometric tabletop experience with floating magnetic tiles that snap into place upon solving. Solvers must organize 16 words into four discrete quartets sharing subtle conceptual, phonetic, or cultural bonds.

The challenge lies in avoiding Red Herrings—words deliberately engineered to fit multiple obvious categories.

1. Deciphering the 4 Color Tiers

Connections categories follow a standardized difficulty hierarchy:

  • Yellow (Easiest): Direct synonyms or tangible real-world objects (e.g., Types of Roofs, Parts of a Shoe).
  • Green (Moderate): Common compound word prefixes or functional associations (e.g., Words Starting with Tree Names, Things That Are Green).
  • Blue (Challenging): Trivia, cultural slang, or grammatical categories (e.g., Board Game Tokens, Homophones for Vegetables).
  • Purple (Hardest): Wordplay, anagrams, homophones, or words that share missing affixes (e.g., ___ Board, Words That Form Other Words When Spelled Backward).

  • 2. The 3 Deduction Axioms

  • Map All 16 Words Before Submitting: Never submit the first 4 words you see! If you spot 5 words associated with Water, you have found a Red Herring. Map out potential groups on paper first.
  • Isolate Part-of-Speech Ambiguity: Pay attention to words that can act as both nouns and verbs (like DUCK, NAIL, BARK, LEAF). Authors rely on your brain defaulting to the noun definition.
  • Analyze the "One Away" Alert: When the board alerts you with One Away, do not randomly swap out all 4 tiles. Identify which 3 words have the tightest conceptual bond and swap only the peripheral candidate.
