Sokoban 3D Warehouse Tactics: Deadlock Prevention & Push Reserves

Invented in Japan in 1981 by Hiroyuki Imabayashi, Sokoban (Warehouse Keeper) is celebrated as one of the purest tests of spatial reasoning in gaming history. In Sokoban 3D, you command a mechanical pusher robot across an architectural diamond grid, sliding heavy wooden crates into glowing golden docking bays.

Because crates can only be pushed and never pulled, a single careless move can permanently ruin a level. This guide outlines the essential deadlock patterns every master warehouse keeper must recognize.

1. The 3 Lethal Deadlock Patterns

# 1. The Non-Goal Continuous Wall Deadlock

The Rule: Never push a crate against a flat continuous wall unless that wall segment contains a designated golden goal socket or an escape doorway. Once a crate is flush against a solid wall, it loses two degrees of freedom: it can only slide along the wall. If you push it into a wall corner, it is permanently frozen.

# 2. The 2x2 Square Deadlock

The Rule: Never allow four blocks (any combination of crates and structural walls) to form a solid 2x2 square. Once four blocks touch in a 2x2 cluster, no crate in that cluster can ever be moved again by any legal push. Watch out for crates resting against protruding corner walls!

# 3. The Dead-End Funnel Trap

If a corridor is 1 tile wide and ends in a blind wall without a goal, pushing a crate into that corridor blocks passage forever. Keep narrow transit corridors completely free of cargo.

2. Advanced Solving Strategies

  • Work Backward from the Deepest Goals: Fill the most inaccessible goal slots first—especially those in tight alcoves or corners. Filling entryway goals too early blocks your turnaround lanes.
  • Maintain Orbital Push Reserves: Keep at least one wide turning bay open so your robot can circle around crates to push from different angles.
  • Use the Undo Feature (U) Freely: PlayLite Sokoban 3D includes a zero-penalty undo stack. If you notice a deadlock developing, step back immediately and re-evaluate your route.
